Etsy Digital Downloads Get a Physical Print Option in New Test

Etsy digital download transforming into physical printed products including framed art, a canvas, mug, and tote bag

Etsy digital downloads may be getting a significant new option.

Etsy is testing a feature that allows buyers who purchase eligible digital files to turn those files into physical printed products through a separate checkout on Etsy.

That means someone could buy a digital design from an Etsy seller and then, after the purchase, be offered the option to have that design printed on a physical product.

The original digital seller does not have to manufacture, package, ship, or provide customer support for the physical item.

But there is an important detail sellers need to understand: the physical product is a separate purchase from a third-party print provider. Etsy’s current seller documentation does not state that the original digital seller receives a portion of that second sale.

So this is not the same as Etsy automatically turning every digital download into an additional source of print-on-demand revenue.

It is still an interesting change—especially for people selling printable artwork and other visual digital products.

What Is Etsy Testing?

Etsy announced the new test as part of its September 2026 seller updates.

Under the test, a buyer who purchases an eligible digital file may see an option after checkout to order that design as a physical printed item.

According to Etsy, the goal is to make it easier for buyers to enjoy digital designs in physical form without creating additional fulfillment work for the original seller. Read Etsy’s official seller announcement

The physical order is handled by Ventur Editions, a third-party print provider operating an Etsy shop.

The process works roughly like this:

  1. A customer purchases an eligible digital item from an Etsy seller.
  2. Etsy may show the customer available physical print options after that purchase.
  3. The customer selects the product and design they want printed.
  4. The customer completes a separate checkout.
  5. Ventur Editions sells, produces, and fulfills the physical item.

The original digital seller does not have to process that second order.

That separation is important.

The digital product remains the seller’s original Etsy transaction. The printed product is another transaction handled through the print provider.

What Can Buyers Have Printed?

The phrase “physical prints” may make this sound like Etsy is only talking about posters.

The test appears to be broader than that.

Etsy says available printed products may include:

  • Framed posters
  • Rolled posters
  • Matte canvases
  • Metal art signs
  • Indoor wall tapestries
  • Coffee mugs
  • Canvas tote bags
  • Greeting cards
  • Crewneck sweatshirts

The available products can depend on the digital file and the printing options offered by the provider.

For someone buying printable wall art, for example, this could remove several steps.

Instead of downloading the file, finding a printing service, uploading the design, choosing the correct dimensions, and placing another order somewhere else, the customer may be able to move directly from the Etsy purchase to a physical version.

That convenience could make digital products more useful to some buyers.

Which Etsy Sellers Are Eligible?

Not every Etsy digital listing automatically qualifies.

According to Etsy’s current seller documentation, a digital listing may be eligible when:

  • The seller’s shop is based in the United States or Canada.
  • The seller does not already offer a physical version of the same design.
  • The seller is not already using their own print-on-demand integration for that design.
  • The digital file meets the print provider’s requirements for high-quality printing.

Etsy says qualifying sellers may be added to the test automatically.

Sellers do not necessarily need to sign up.

However, participation is optional.

A seller who does not want eligible products included can disable the feature through Etsy’s Shop Manager settings. Etsy says the opt-out currently applies to the entire shop rather than individual listings. See Etsy’s seller instructions for the print test

Who Handles the Physical Order?

This may be the most important distinction in the entire update.

The original digital seller is not responsible for the physical product.

Ventur Editions handles the physical item as a separate seller.

That means Ventur Editions handles:

  • The physical-product listing
  • Printing
  • Fulfillment
  • Shipping
  • Customer support for the printed item
  • Reviews associated with the printed item

If there is a problem with the physical order, Etsy directs the buyer to the print provider rather than the original digital seller.

That could protect digital sellers from one of the biggest drawbacks of adding physical merchandise: additional operational work.

Selling a downloadable file is relatively simple once the product is created.

Physical products introduce manufacturing, inventory or print-on-demand coordination, shipping, damaged packages, delivery questions, returns, and other customer-service responsibilities.

This test keeps those two businesses separated.
